You love your music and you have a huge passion and desire to start learning how to DJ, you want to learn how to beatmatch and DJ mix like a pro – BUT you have one small problem, the DJ equipment you need to get started is too expensive.
This in the past has always been a massive problem, particularly when I look back to when I was an aspiring DJ trying to rustle the cash together for my first DJ set up. You could be excused for thinking it is still a problem today for kids all over the world wanting to learn how to DJ.
The perception is still out there that you need lots of money to even begin your dream of becoming a DJ let alone ever living that dream.
The perception reminds me of snowboarding and skiing – it’s something left for the wealthy people of this world – this may be true in their world but fortunately if you want to become a DJ it is not true in ours ANYMORE!
I’m about to knock that perception on the head once and for all, I’m going to show you how you can get everything you need to become a quality DJ without spending a dime on dj equipment.
Introducing Mixxx a FREE open source DJ mixing software that gives you everything you need to perform live mixes. Mixx is a complete package for amateur and professional DJs alike, providing everything you need to create live mixes with club-worthy sound quality.
New to DJing?
No problem – Mixxx can run without any extra hardware, and is a fully functional replacement for “turntables and mixer” DJ set up.
Experienced DJ?
Mixxx supports advanced features like comprehensive MIDI controller support, vinyl control, and multi-core CPU support.
Mixxx Features:
BPM estimation
Mixxx measures the BPM of each song to help beat match faster.
Parallel waveform displays
See the beats in the songs line up when mixing; essentially it’s a visual representation of your mix which will help you quickly spot a drift – this will fast track your beatmatching and help you take it to the next level.
Waveform summaries
Visually see the dynamics of an entire track; just like with vinyl and on the display screens of CD decks.
MP3 / OGG / WAVE / FLAC playback
Mix your tracks without having to convert your music collection.
Pitch-independent time stretch
Change the speed of a song without altering the pitch.
Vinyl & CD emulation
Adjust the pitch of a song, just like on a real turntable or CD deck.
Wave Recording
Record and save your mixes on the fly – perfect for when you are a beginner DJ so you can listen back on your mixes and hear where you need to improve – it’s also perfect for creating your DJ demo CDs that you will be handing around to the masses and help you land your first DJ gig

Nice article. I love Traktor/hate windows. Don’t mind Mixx/Love Linux. Word of warning though. This is purely entry level software. If it keeps advancing at the rate it’s going it can catch up with Traktor, but that is a few years away yet.
If your serious Traktor is the only option even if it is on Windows. But traktor does cost £175. Bit steep.
If it’s entry level then it’s perfect for me! Thanks for the added insight TightGrip appreciated!! Windows is all I know (must get up with the times).

Mixxx is definetly a good software, but it doesn’t compare to the fully-functional VirtualDJ’s free version. http://virtualdj.freeware.net/ I did download Mixxx, but after using VirtualDJ for a week, it just couldn’t compare and didn’t have all of the features I wanted it to have. So, no thanks to Mixxx.
I apologize for the link above – it seems I was wrong.
But you can download the free version called VirtualDJ Home [7] here.

I was wondering what kind of software should I be using?
Either the virtualdj software or the mixxx software are the best place to start!
