One of the most common questions I get asked is: If I wanted to become a DJ where exactly do I start?

For simplicity I have broken down the answer into three separate short answers! I have also added some relevant quotes from a couple of the best DJs in the world.

Become a DJ – Get your Feet Wet

If you are thinking about becoming a DJ and have had no experience playing around with Equipment then you need to either go to a shop that has a display set up that you can play with or find a friend that will let you have a play around with their DJ equipment. You need to get your feet wet and test the waters.

DJ equipment is affordable in most cases but it still isn’t cheap so if you can get your hands on someone else’s equipment to get a feel for what you are about to embark on then when it comes time to hand your hard earned money over you can hand it over with confidence that you know what you are getting.

Become a DJ – Learn all you can

If you haven’t already bought your equipment then I always say that it’s a great idea to learn all you can before you do. This way you will have a clear understanding of what is involved and what challenges lie ahead. It will also help fast track your progress if and when you decide to take the plunge. This way you will be clear with what you need to be practicing to begin progressing.

Little Louie Vega Quote:

“I just want to say to all those people out there who want to get involved in DJing to educate yourselves. Don’t be afraid to try something different. Go for yours. There is always more to learn.

Become a DJ – Practice

The last thing left after you have had a play around with some equipment, learnt all you can and taken the plunge is to practice.

Over 500 students from all over the world have completed the DJ Master Course training program and I can tell you the things that separate the real DJ’s is a true desire to learn, an attitude of being prepared to do whatever it takes and practice – lots of it!

Practice makes perfect!

Above is a very simplistic way of working out where to start when you want to become a DJ. If you are serious about becoming a DJ it doesn’t matter which way you go about it as long as you stay passionate, keep learning and enjoy yourself!

Paul van Dyk Quote:

paul van dyk2 Become a DJ Where to Start !

“When I started, DJs weren’t in the media, electronic music wasn’t in the sales charts, and a DJ was the freak in the corner that provided the music while other people had fun. So to do it, you must have been a freak and a music lover. And I still am: this is still the engine which drives me.”
