When I was sitting at my computer trying to decide on the best place to kick off the DJ Master Course blog it was too hard to go past looking after my current students who have just completed or who are coming to the end of the DJ Master Course training – these students no doubt are starting to think about landing there first gig, I figure the more advice I can offer in this area the better…

The DJ master Course itself does cover in detail landing your first DJ gig and how to approach it etc but I thought I would elaborate a little more and from a slightly different angle…

Key Note –  Networking!

I was once told several years ago that if you aren’t networking then you aren’t working – this statement is critically true if your dream is to become a professional DJ.

Once you have mastered the fundamentals of a successful DJ which you learn as part of the Full DJ Master Course Online Training Program there is something you need to do that cannot be practiced in the bedroom. You need to go out and inject yourself in the community in which you want to start Djing.

You need to get out and network with current DJ’s, promoters and even punters in that space… BUT and I mean a BIG BUT you need to be ready, I can tell you from the overwhelming success of the DJ Master Course that there are loads of kids just like yourself taking up learning how to DJ on a daily basis – not all though will become successful DJ’s. The main difference between the successful and non successful that I have found after training already hundreds of DJ’s is the level of preparation and readiness when an opportunity arrives.

When I say being ready I don’t just mean being able to put a couple of tunes together – I mean being able to wow the promoters, other DJ’s and punters with your perfection, class, and skill all the while exuding almost arrogant levels of confidence.

You want to be the next big thing people are talking about and the only way to do this is through preparation and hard work – you need to become like a sponge and absorb anything and everything you can related to DJing and the music you love, you have to want to be the best to become the best!

You need to be ready for the un known, you need to have an arsenal to draw on and the nous to adapt to whatever the dance floor or situation throws up at you – from tough crowds to faulty equipment, I can assure you nothing ever goes to plan in club land!

It’s a jungle out there – you need to find a point of difference, a reason why punters should or would want to not only remember you but want to see you again and again opposed to your competition, this can be done through your music selection and your networking but its most powerful and sustainable when you wow with your true DJing skills and knowledge of what you are truly trying to achieve.

You don’t want to be learning on the job, you want to be patient and put in the time required practicing in your bedroom, rocking house parties and recording demo CD’s to listen back on so that you can hone and perfect.

When your time does come to shine despite nerves, faulty equipment and the like you don’t want to feel like you have just gotten away with it you want to be sure with no uncertain terms that you nailed it! This way all the networking you have done to get that opportunity doesn’t end up wasted.

Through hard work you will have created your own luck, the right people will have taken notice and you as a package will be ready to capitalize on the momentum you have just started to build.

Momentum is everything. If you rush into your first set and are not truly ready then you won’t be able to build on that momentum, and all the networking you will have done up until that point will be wasted. Result: You will slot right in next to the rest of the want to be DJ’s of this world that weren’t prepared to do whatever it takes and put in the hard work.

In conclusion

Regardless of what anyone else tells you – THERE IS NO MAGIC FORMULA and there are NO SHORTCUTS TO BECOMING A SUCCESSFUL DJ so anyone telling you different isn’t telling you the truth, everyone has different learning capabilities, what works for one may not work for another, it’s about understanding your own learning capabilities, immersing yourself in the right information and then making a commitment to hard work.

You need to adopt the attitude of being prepared to do whatever it takes – if you do then the one thing that I can GUARANTEE is that it will be well worth it – the old saying “the more you put into something the more you will get out” rings true!
