Before we get into the 4 easy steps I want to give you a quick 101 on song structure.
Song Structure
In dance music, almost always song structure revolves around multiples of four, for example:
Four beats = a bar
Four bars = a phrase
Four phrases = a verse (although in the case of a verse this is a general rule of thumb which can vary depending on the producer)

Perfect Mixing Step #1 – Beatmatching
Beatmatching is the number one fundamental skill of all DJs, it’s also the skill that is going to take the longest to master. It’s important you understand that once you do master beatmatching you shouldn’t stop there, it isn’t enough, not if you want to become a world class DJ.
Perfect Mixing Step #2 – Bar matching
Once you master matching the beats you need to start learning how to match the bars. Essentially you need to line up the first beat of each bar of the two tracks you are mixing.
Perfect Mixing Step #3 – Phrase Matching
You need to know how to identify the phrases because when you start your mix, you need to synchronize both the incoming and outgoing tunes phrases. If you don’t and their phrases are out of line, your mix will sound messy and confusing.
The idea is to get both tunes grooving along within the same structure so that all the musical changes are synchronized.
Perfect Mixing Step #4 – Harmonic mixing
The last step to creating perfect mixes is learning how to mix harmoniously, all music is written in different keys, harmonic mixing is all about learning which of these keys are compatible. In the old days you needed to have an ear for music, these days all you need is someone to point you in the right direction.

I can understand if you are new to DJing and this is all sounding a little foreign, that’s fine though! For now all you need to do is understand that each of the above steps is what it takes to become a world class DJ.
