The summer here in Australia is just about to start firing up from a festival point of view. One of the best things about living in Australia is the summer festival calendar which attracts the biggest DJs around the globe to some of the biggest festivals on the planet.

Today I want to share my personal favourite, I have been lucky enough to travel the world and take in some of the best festivals and clubs but none compare to Australia’s very own Rainbow Serpent Festival, this long running festival not only continues to deliver every year but get better.

Rainbow Serpent Festival is one of Australia’s most loved international music, arts and culture festivals. It is a three day camping event in rural Victoria with some of the biggest sound systems and DJ’s the world has on offer, but it’s not these that set it apart they are just the cream on top! What truly sets Rainbow Serpent Festival apart is its story.

Rainbow Serpent Story

“While dancing their dreamings, Aboriginals spiritually connect themselves to the land and to the Dreamtime. The drumming of feet during the dance draws the earth into dialogue with the dancers, allowing the ceremony to bring the power of the dreaming to life.”

Distinctly Australian, the name ‘Rainbow Serpent’ comes from the Dreamtime creation story told by the traditional owners of this land. These stories often vary between indigenous tribes, however the Rainbow Serpent story is special as it is one of the few common to all.

The Rainbow Serpent is protector of the land, its people and is the source of life.

In the Dreamtime, the world was in darkness – flat, bare and cold. The Rainbow Serpent slept underground with all the animal tribes of the World in her belly. When it was time, she awakened, pushed up through the layers of the Earth & gave birth to the animal tribes.

She created the land, mountains and hills, then spilled water over the newly formed landscapes that became rivers and lakes. She created the sun, the moon, the fire and all the colours.

The symbol of the serpent or snake plays an important role in every culture, not only does it connect tribes, it also unites people of all different cultures and walks of life throughout the world. Through dance, music and artistic expression, Rainbow Serpent Festival also inspires people from across the globe to dance a common dream.

Over the years Rainbow Serpent has evolved beyond a festival, into a community of like minded individuals from the four corners of the world, for some, including myself this is where my year begins and ends!

If you have never been and you love music and dance then Rainbow Serpent Festival is a must.
