So your thinking about becoming a DJ but aren’t 100% sure what it’s all about!

In this post my plan is to help you understand exactly what DJ mixing is, I’ll give you some DJ tips on getting started and hopefully show you that anyone with a passion for music and a desire to learn can make it as a professional DJ.

DJ Mixing aka beatmixing is the art of getting the beats of two separate tracks playing in perfect synchronization at the same BPM (beats per minute) so you can blend from one track to another seamlessly without having to stop and start the tracks.

This allows you to play continuously to a dancefloor keeping the momentum and building the energy as time or the night goes on. It also allows you to create perfect mix CDs that you can use to help catapult your DJ career.

How do you do the blending?

Once you have the two tracks beatmatched you would use a DJ mixer to blend from one track to the other.

You’ll need two CD players and a DJ mixer. The DJ mixer needs to have two separate channels, one for each of the CD players; this allows you to use the mixer to blend from one CD player to the other. So essentially from one track to the other

When blending from one track to the other the trick is to do it seamlessly so the listener cannot notice what you are doing. You want them to continue on their own journey enjoying the music. The last thing you want to do is interrupt someones listening experience with bad mixing, it changes the vibe, the energy and essentially the entire experience.

Where should I start?

The best place to start is by learning about song structure, this will allow you to completely understand the best way to blend two separate tracks together.

Most DJs believe that learning how to match the beats is what DJing is all about, although this is correct to some degree, it’s barely a drop in the ocean if you want to become a quality, respected DJ.

Music is written in a specific structure; it starts with beats but involves bars and phrases. Learning how to match these bars and phrases is as equally important as beatmatching, if you want to become the best DJ you can!!!

This may sound confusing and difficult but I can assure you that once you master how to match the beats, learning how to match the bars and phrases is just a matter of putting the time into understanding the song structure and then working with it.

Can anyone learn how to DJ?

YES, absolutely anyone! All you need is a passion for music, a desire to learn and a good DJ mentor to point you in the right direction and help fast track your progress!

The below statement should say it all.

“If you care at all you’ll get some results, if you care enough you’ll get incredible results!”
